Last Wednesday, Senator Isakson of Georgia introduced the Veterans Appeals Improvement and Modernization Act to create three paths for veterans unsatisfied with the Veterans Benefits Administration’s initial decision on their VA benefit claims.
Veterans can wait up to five years if they appeal the initial decision. Legislators intend to reduce this waiting period to 125 days. The bill would allow some veterans currently going through the appeals system to transfer into the new system.
The number of appeals pending increased from 380,000 to 470,000 between fiscal years 2015 and 2017, an increase of more than 20%.
