GAO Compassionate Allowance Recommendations

The Government Accountability Office released a report with recommendations on changes to the Compassionate Allowance initiative because the most severely ill workers may not have quick access to their benefits.

The Social Security Administration’s Compassionate Allowance initiative was designed to give priority status to claimants who have certain medical conditions and move them to the front of the disability benefits queue.

The GAO’s report provided eight recommendations such as how to improve the way SSA gathers information on potential Compassionate Allowance initiative conditions and how the criteria for the initiative is communicated.

More than one million Americans now wait an average of over 600 days for a hearing before an Administrative Law Judge, and thousands die every year while on the waitlist.
