The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety conducted a survey asking drivers to self-report whether they had engaged in speeding, texting, and red light running. Drivers between 19 to 24 had the highest percentage of drivers who reported engaging in these dangerous driving behaviors.
Dangerous driving behaviors all increase the risk of collision. Distracted driving has increased significantly with the advent of navigation systems, in-vehicle entertainment systems, and smartphones.
Passengers in the vehicle pose particular problems for teenage drivers. Research demonstrates that the risk of having an accident increases with the number of passengers a teen driver transports.
