Social Security Disability & SSI

What is Supplemental Security Income (SSI)?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is available to disabled individuals who may have a limited work history and whose income and assets fall within certain limits.

What do I need to be eligible for SSI?

  • Meet the medical requirements and have a documented medical condition that prevents you from being able to work.
  • Have limited income.
  • Have limited resources (less than $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple).

When can I start receiving SSI benefits?

SSI benefits cannot go back to any month before the application is filed. Therefore, it is important to file for SSI benefits as soon as possible.

How much are SSI monthly payments?

The maximum monthly SSI payments can be found on SSA’s website. The SSI payment amount is calculated on a yearly basis with increases based on cost-of-living adjustments. The standard amount can be reduced based on your income, assets, or living situation.

Child SSI Benefits

If you have a child under the age of 18 with a physical, mental, or emotional condition that affects their ability to function at home and/or school, your child may be eligible for SSI. SSI benefits for children are not connected to whether or not the child can work. Rather, they are based on marked or severe limitations in their daily functioning. Social Security will consider your family’s household income and resources when determining if your child meets the financial requirements for SSI.
