The NVLSP VA Benefit Identifier is an app launched recently by the National Veterans Legal Services Program to assist veterans in determining benefit eligibility. The app is available through the Apple App Store, Google Play Store, or the NVLSP website.
The app features a questionnaire for veterans to complete, and then the app tells them if they should file a claim for service-connected disability benefits or a nonservice-connected disability pension. This assistance is performed without the involvement of a veteran’s service officer.
The app functions in both English and Spanish, and it generates additional questions based on the initially-provided answers. No personally identifiable information or data is retained to protect individuals’ privacy.
After completing the questionnaire, the results can be printed or emailed and used as a reference should the veteran decide to file a claim for VA benefits. In order to fill it out, veterans should have their military service documents (DD Form 214) available, along with information about any prior VA decisions, medical conditions, or related communications.
The National Veterans Legal Services Program is a non-profit, independent veterans service organization that has been assisting veterans since 1980. The NVLSP offers training for advocates and attorneys, representatives and litigates for veterans and their families before the VA, publishes the nation’s definitive guide on veteran benefits, and connects veterans and active duty personnel with pro bono help when seeking disability benefits.
