A former US Postal Service employee claimed total disability after back surgery and received more than $500,000 in workers’ compensation benefits for ten years.
The woman, Deborah Durand, was sentenced earlier this month and sentenced to 15 months in prison for fraudulently obtaining more than $683,000 in wages, medical expenses, and other benefits from the US Department of Labor from 2006 to 2016.
She was also ordered to pay over $900,000 in restitution and criminal forfeiture.
Ms. Durand did suffer a back injury while at her job that required surgery. But instead of returning to work when she was physically able, she filed for total disability status. Her plan was foiled, however, when she went on a three-day kayaking trip with undercover federal agents.
