Three black NYPD detectives who said they were discriminated against because of their race recently received a $700,000 settlement. The detectives, Theodore Coleman, Roland Stephens, and Jon McCollum, put the blame on their commanding officer, Thomas Galati for continually promoting less-qualified white officers and systematically discriminating against them.

The detectives claimed: “In spite of their proven track records of achievement and strong recommendations from their direct supervisors, they were repeatedly passed up for promotion due to their race. More than one supervisor who recommended them said that if they had been white then they would have been promoted.”

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission backed their claims after a 2016 report that came after a five-year probe described a secret process of promotions that was “wholly subjective” and operated “without any structured guidelines.”

Despite the settlement, the NYPD does not accept responsibility. As a NYPD spokeswoman stated: “Discretionary promotions are based on a number of considerations which may include time, grade, and performance. The city made a practical decision to settle this case with no admission of wrongdoing on the part of the NYPD, and with claims against all NYPD officials dismissed.”
